IELTS

IELTS, the international English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is the language of communication. IELTS is recognized by universities and employers in many countries, including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK & the USA. Its is also recognized by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies. More the 1.5 million people a year take the test.


IELTS is jointly managed by university of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council and IDP:IELTS Australia. IELTS conforms to the highest international standards of language assessment.


There are two versions of IELTS to choose from: Academic IELTS
                                                                                General Training IELTS

Academic IELTS - Institutions of Higher & Further Education.

The Academic format is, broadly speaking, for those who want to study or train in an English- speaking university or Institutions of Higher & Further Education. Admission to Undergraduate & Postgraduate courses is based on the results of the Academic test. IELTS Academic may also be a requirements to join a professional organisation in an English- speaking country.

General IELTS - for school, work or migration

The General Training format focuses on general survival skills in broad social & workplace contexts. It is typically for those who are going to English- speaking countries to do secondary education, work experience or training programs. People migrating to Australia, Canada & New Zealand must sit the General Training test.

The IELTS test has four sections or modules. Such as Reading, Writing, Listening, & Speaking. Students must sit all four sections. While all students take the same Listening & Speaking tests, they sit different Reading & Writing tests, depending on whether they have selected the Academic IELTS test or the General Training IELTS test.

1. Listening - 4 sections, 40 questions, 30 minutes
2. Speaking - interview, 15 minutes
3. Reading - different for Academic or General Training - 3 sections, 40 questions, 60 minutes
4. Writing - different for Academic or General Training - 2 pieces of writing, 60 minutes


IELTS Scores. 

You can get a score between 1 and 9. Half scores such as 6.5 are possible. Universities often demand an IELTS score of 6 or 7. They may also demand a minimum score in each of the 4 sections.
The IELTS nine (9) band score system grades scores consistently. It is secure, benchmarked and understood worldwide. Test materials are designed carefully so that every version of the test is of a comparable level of difficulty.
